The British misperception that working in hospitality is ‘not a real job’ is nothing new. The issue of this viewpoint has become even more prevalent in the wake of Brexit. Citizens from other EU countries make up as much as a quarter of the 3 million UK hospitality workers.
Leading figures in the industry are calling upon the Government to implement a strategy to fundamentally change this misperception.
Kate Nicholls CEO of UKHospitality said, “The UK’s hospitality sector is a dynamic and resourceful one, but it still faces barriers to growth, particularly regarding employment” she also commented that there is a need to “challenge perceptions and promote and enhance the work hospitality businesses already do”.
The truth is that the sector is full of opportunities for career progression and development.
In the UK, the hospitality industry has grown more rapidly than any other sector since the 2008 financial crash. For the past 5 years it has grown between 5% and 6.5% year on year, and now has an annual combined turnover of £100 Billion. It is the fourth largest employer in Britain and is a top six employer in every region in the country.
Therefore, the decision to dismiss the hospitality industry based on the opinion that it can only offer a ‘job’ rather than a career is ill-advised and un-informed. The industry has many roles that you can get your teeth stuck into, Management, HR, Marketing and Business Development to name a few. Ultimately workers can progress and have a successful, satisfying career.
