Misconceptions surrounding Apprenticeships

For the full month of February, we’re celebrating everything apprenticeships!

Kicking off the month, National Apprenticeship Week (3rd - 7th February) encouraged people to #lookbeyond their assumptions and learn more about the benefits of apprenticeship schemes.

To further our support, we’re debunking common misconceptions and revealing the truth about apprenticeships.

“Apprenticeships are only for school leavers”

In reality, there’s no age limitations. While young people have previously been the target audience, apprenticeships are designed to support all ages. For some, they provide an opportunity to switch career paths, discover a new passion, or obtain qualifications a little further down the line.

The current group of students enrolled in the University of Cumbria’s Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship include college leavers, parents, and carers. People of all ages who wish to jump start their careers in tourism and hospitality.

“Apprenticeships are worth less than degrees”

Apprenticeships offer paid on-site work experience, employee benefits, and support from both your employer and the Government. It’s a route suited to industries that benefit from on the job studying, like hospitality and tourism management.

“I really liked the idea of being able to work while getting my degree and gain the qualification and experience to back it up. ” Megan Brierly, apprentice at Lakeland Arts.

There are a selection of Apprenticeships that are being supported by the Government. For example, the Chartered Managers Degree has 90% of the course costs covered by the Government and 10% covered by the employer. Enabling a debt free path into your chosen career. Though, each apprenticeship varies which is why it is always wise to do your research.

“Employers don’t value apprenticeships”

Employers within tourism and hospitality are aware of the issues our industry faces. As a whole, there’s a drought of supervisors and managers, a perception that our industry doesn’t build careers, and a desperate need for new talent and innovators.

As a result, employers are keener than ever to welcome apprentices into their business. As an apprentice you’re a full time member of staff with a guaranteed three year retainment. Therefore, employers will invest time in developing your skills, creating a concrete foundation for you to build your career.
