Promoting Sustainability in Your Business

Global warming and climate change has dominated the news over the past few weeks.

Concerns are growing about the impact certain industries have on the environment. Particular attention has been brought to the Lake District with our lush landscape and high numbers of tourists. We always feel like we can be doing more to care for our beautiful home which is why we’ve come up with some ways you can promote sustainability throughout your business.

Source local, source organic

When creating your seasonal menus and purchasing stock, we recommend first exploring local sources for seasonal and organic ingredients. Not only will this allow you to support fellow Lake District businesses, it’s a huge selling point for health and environmentally conscious travellers. Plus, by sourcing locally your business will be reducing petrol usage and your carbon footprint while receiving good quality produce.

Feed your garden and it’ll grow

Food wastage is a massive issue within the hospitality industry across the globe. Tonnes of off cuts, unfinished dishes, and ‘expired’ food is being thrown away every day. However, there’s a simple solution to reduce how much food you business wastes. Composting. Take any organic matter like carrot skins, banana peels, eggshells, and coffee and fill up your compost bin. Once everything has sat for a while, you can use this to fertilise the outdoor plants on your land. Your plants will thank you and travellers will be in awe at your beautiful garden.

Ditch disposables

One novelty of staying in a luxurious hotel is the free toiletries you find perched upon the bathroom counter. However, while the products you offer may be luxurious themselves, the plastic packaging is certainly not. Ditch disposable plastic bottles and instead opt for either biodegradable packaging or bulk dispensers. As not all plastic gets recycled, even if the bottle states it can be recycled, it’s better to avoid it.

Keep clean, be green

Another game changer is green cleaning supplies. They offer a safer, more environmentally friendly solution to wiping down surfaces and washing linen. Switch to bio-based products to not only prevent excess pollution, but to also avoid skin damage from harsh chemicals. By swapping to a more natural formula you can enjoy a green cleaning and a fresh scent.

As we move into the next decade of the 21st century, it’s important to remember that sustainable growth for both our industry and our planet is the key to a successful future. As tourists become more conscious of their environmental impact, they will look towards hotels and attractions to make a holiday with them a more environmentally viable option.
